Briny Exchanges: Literature, Commerce, and the Sea

Briny ExchangesPosted October 22, 2020:

In the spring I’ll be teaching two sections of my course “Briny Exchanges.” This course is made especially for advanced students of Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business. I’ve included a brief introduction that I recorded for Fordham’s English Connect.

Briny Exchanges: Literature, Commerce, and the Sea

This course considers literature that takes place on or within the ocean, as well as how these texts are responding to transoceanic economic relationships and their social repercussions. Crossing multiple oceans, we will read works from 900 AD to today and consider such topics as the labors of sailors and shipwreck survivors, connections between the trans-Atlantic slave trade and insurance, and the cultural aftereffects of whaling. Fulfills the Texts and Contexts requirement.
