“Liquid Materiality and Language”
Friday, April 12, 2019 10:00-12:00

(excerpt from Sea and Spar Between)

I will be presenting material from my dissertation at the Water Logics Conference, held at Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, April 11-12, 2019. I’ll be addressing Stéphane Mallarmé’s 1897 poem “Un Coup de Dés,” translated as “A Roll of the Dice,” L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poet Bob Perelman’s poem “Before Water,” first performed in 1977, and Nick Montfort and Stephanie Strickland’s digital poetry generator Sea and Spar Between, released online in 2010.

I’ll be discussing ways that these poems explore language as material, as well as sharing a deep interest in the ocean as an organizing structure for their work. Why is the ocean an important presence in these texts, and what connections can we draw between our experiences of the ocean and of language?

Please join us at the Water Logics Conference, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, April 11-12, 2019.
